an exhibition of paintings by

Karen Roulstone

&

Connor McIntyre

11 May - 28 June 2026

This exhibition of paintings by Karen Roulstone and Connor McIntyre concerns Absence in both a philosophical and physical sense. Karen and Connor’s early relationship was articulated through painterly dialogue (and dancing together) at The Alamo - the studio they founded and shared in Plymouth. They became, and remained, partners up until Karen’s untimely death in 2019, soon after she was appointed the first female Head of Painting at Glasgow School of Art. A Derridean concept of absence was always central to Karen’s painting, but is here considered alongside the reality of physical absence. The exhibition also reflects on the painterly sublime, intimacy, and influence - an influence that may be traced in Connor’s work even as his visual inquiry evolves. The installation at The Underground Stream seeks to reconjure the dialogue - and the dance - between these two exceptional painters.
